The agreement aims to establish promotional collaboration between the two sites, both of which were selected in 2007 as part of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and to enhance cultural understanding, marketing, and tourism promotion between both sides.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Fares Al-Brezat, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Petra Authority, and Dr. Alfonsina Russo, Director General of the Colosseum Park.
Al-Brezat explained that the agreement is part of the authority’s efforts to economically, culturally, and tourism-wise develop the city of Petra. He added that the agreement will open new horizons for cultural exchange and tourism marketing between the two parties and allow for the placement of promotional materials for Petra at the Colosseum Park, which receives approximately 14 million visitors annually.
For her part, Dr. Russo confirmed that the agreement is part of the Colosseum Park’s cooperation with global institutions to enhance the role of culture in strengthening relations between civilizations and promoting cooperation with the archaeological city of Petra, one of the world’s most famous archaeological cities and sites.
The agreement focuses on supporting cooperation in multiple areas, including organizing workshops for preserving archaeological sites, holding joint cultural events, and exchanging information about shared activities.
It also includes preparing programs for mutual visits to promote the two sites, along with providing media materials and introductory videos to be displayed at both sites.
Both parties emphasized that this step is not just an agreement of cooperation but symbolizes global partnership that contributes to enhancing the cultural and civilizational heritage of Petra and the Colosseum, solidifying their status as global tourist destinations that attract visitors from around the world.
It is worth mentioning that Petra has previously signed twinning agreements with the Alhambra Palace and the Generalife in Spain, and the municipality of Barbarano Romano in Italy, and is working on signing several more agreements with other New Seven Wonders of the World in the near future.
