— The
historic city of Petra in southern Jordan has broken its own record for
the highest number of visitors in a single month.

According
to
Suleiman Al-Farajat, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Petra Region Authority, 324,350 people visited the rose-red city in March 2023. This,
he added, is the
highest number in the history of tourism to Petra in just one
month.
This
marks a 35 percent increase from the number of visitors recorded in 2019, with
292,350 foreign tourists making up the majority of visitors.
The increase in visitors was of great benefit to the local communities.
Of
the foreign tourists, American visited the site the most, with 23,746 tourists.
This was followed by Italians at 16,108, French at 13,926 and Germans at
13,565.
Tourism boost for local communitiesFarajat
noted that the increase in visitors was of great benefit to the local communities
in
Wadi Musa, where Petra is located, as well as the surrounding areas of
Umm Sayhun and Bayda.
Farajat
added that the
Petra Region Authority will focus on expanding the areas that
are benefiting from the tourism hike and improve the level of services provided
to visitors.
