It said the increased number came as the tourist
season began in areas across the Kingdom, where milder temperatures are
expected in the next few days, as favored by many Western European sightseers.
According to statistics issued on Sunday by the
Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), 66,061 tourists with
foreign nationalities, and 9,269 Jordanian and Arab sightseers visited Petra
last month.
Suliman Farajat,
PDTRA chairman of the board of commissioners, said that Petra saw a “lively”
tourism movement in September, especially as the tourist season kicked off and
temperatures in the southern region dipped to become pleasant during daytime.
Farajat predicted
a further increase in the number of visitors in the coming days, noting that
this would make up for the losses in the tourism sector, sustained in the wake
of the
COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent activity, which paralyzed several
economic sectors.
