PETRA – Al-Mamlaka TV
reported on Wednesday that Petra's visitor count increased by 27.7 percent
between 2022 and 2023, surpassing one million for the second time in its
tourism history.

According to the study,
Petra received 1.2 million visitors, with 111,652 Jordanians and 1.04 million
foreigners.
In 2022 alone, the total
number of visitors was 904,654, with 185,956 Jordanians and 718,698 foreigners.
However, by the end of
2023, Jordan's
Minister of Tourism,
Makram Al-Qaisi, had reported a 50 percent
drop in hotel bookings since the start of Israel's war on Gaza on
October 7,
2023.
Fares Braizat, the head of
the
Petra Development and Tourism Authority (
PDTRA), stated in December 2023 that
tourism in Petra had decreased from 6,000 to 500 tourists per day as a result
of
Israel's war in Gaza.
The Financial Committee of
the House of Representatives also indicated that the war had an impact on
Jordan's tourism sector, with a 90 percent drop in performance outcomes for the
fourth quarter of 2023.
