AMMAN — The number of visitors the ancient
city of Petra rose during January and February, marking a “great start” to
2023, according to the chief commissioner of
Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).

Figures published on Monday showed that
180,388 tourists visited the city in the first two months of this year.
According to
PDTRA, the number by the end of the year may surpass the 1.1
million tourists welcomed in 2019.
Chief Commissioner of
PDTRA Suleiman Al-Farajat told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that he has “great hopes for
Petra in 2023”, citing the rose-red city's prominence on the global tourism
map, current hotel bookings, and the authority’s up-to-date statistics.
The Kingdom’s tourist gemLast month, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities,
Makram Al-Qaisi, said that over 70 percent of the
Jordan Tourism Board's
(JTB) promotional advertisements within and outside the Kingdom feature Petra.
Qaisi explained that Petra is not only a
famous domestic tourist attraction, but it is also globally renowned, and
Jordan is recognized for it as a prime site.
