AMMAN — The National Report on Business
Accountability in Jordan, recently published by the
Business and Human Rights Monitor, stressed the need to develop a national action plan for business and
human rights to preserve the interests of various parties, most importantly, of
the workers.

The plan should entail regular dialogue and possible
areas of cooperation with the government, based on clear mechanisms.
According to the report, no company in Jordan
pledged to help the Kingdom achieve the sustainable development goals, “although
corporate social responsibility is not a strange concept in Jordan”. It adds
that “lack of sufficient awareness of the importance of sustainable development
and the role of the developmental business sector led to that”.
The report called for the establishment of strict
regulatory mechanisms for companies in development zones, to ensure compliance
with local and international laws.
Director of the
Phenix center, Ahmed Awad, told Jordan
News that the report “was not surprising, because it reflects our real
experience with respecting labor sector standards, and shows that the
government and the private sector do not care to respect workers’ rights”.
Awad stressed that the more the private sector
abides by labor standards, the more business work will be sustainable and
achieve greater profits.
Awad urged the government to ensure that the private
sector respects the labor laws, a thing local institutions have been calling
for, for years.
Head of Workers’ House
Hamada Abu Nijmeh told Jordan
News that it is imperative to “work within the framework of an
agreed plan, otherwise we will remain in the chaos of decisions issued by the
government, without coordination with other parties, like workers’ and
employers’ representatives”.
He stressed that “working without a plan will lead
to high unemployment rates, the absence of legal protections, disruption of
relations between workers and employers, failure to achieve an effective labor
market, and reduced productive capacity of institutions”.
Director of Awareness and Training department at the
National Center for Human Rights Issa Meriziq told Jordan
News that “we call for the activation and amendment of some laws,
and to ratify of international conventions”.
He stressed the need to reconsider some legislation
related to worker protection issues “in order to arrive at some kind of balance
between the workers and employers”.
