The minister urged the international community to finance the Jordan Response Plan (JRP) for the Syrian crisis, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
According to a ministry statement issued Saturday, Shraideh said that hosting more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees in Jordan has “exacerbated” the burdens placed on Jordan’s national budget, host communities, and public services.
In this regard, the minister stressed the importance of increasing and maintaining the international community’s support to Jordan.
Shraideh urged the international community to assume its responsibility to countries hosting Syrian refugees, specifically Jordan, in light of the “notable” decline in assistance to the JRP from donors over the last two years.
The minister also called on the international community to provide “sufficient” funding to support the JRP 2021, which was prepared and updated through joint effort among all relevant ministries and institutions, UN organizations, donor countries, and non-governmental bodies.
The JRP 2021 includes a new element to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan’s financial needs stand at nearly $2.4 billion, allocated to meet the needs of refugees and host communities, as well as enable the Jordanian government to continue providing basic services to Syrian refugees, according to Shraideh.
According to the ministry, the JRP is 77.2 percent short of its funding, a total of $1.8 billion.
