AMMAN —The spokesperson for the
Ministry of Industry, Trade,
and Supply, Yanal Barmawi, said Jordan imports wheat and barley from different
sources and that the ministry has a plan to increase the wheat and barley
storage capacity of the Kingdom to about 2.5 million tons by the end of this
year. Jordan’s monthly
consumption of wheat is about 90 thousand tons.

Barmawi confirmed the availability of a sufficient and safe
strategic stockpile of wheat and barley, sufficient for local consumption for
12 months.
He said in a press statement on Sunday that the availability
of this stockpile makes the Kingdom immune in the short term from being
affected by Russia’s withdrawal from the
grain agreement, Al-Mamlaka News
reported.
If the crisis persists, it will certainly have negative
repercussions on global markets and grain supplies, especially wheat, which may
lead to higher prices and affect importing countries.
Barmawi pointed out that the Ministry of Industry, Trade,
and Supply continuously launches tenders to purchase more quantities and keep
stocks at high levels.
