AMMAN — Speaking at the recently held Global Forum for
Moderation, in a symposium titled “Jordan: Reality and Future Challenges”,
former deputy prime minister Marwan Muasher said “I do not exaggerate when I say that
people are tired of talking about political reform”, adding that the Jordanian
political system is not yet decided on the issue of reform, which “continues to
hit the wall”.

He added: “Today
we are at a crossroads, as the old ways and their tools are no longer suitable,
and the executive authority no longer has the tools capable of reform. Debt,
unemployment and poverty are on the rise, unemployment reached 50 percent, and
the executive authority must act to ensure civil peace and stability.”
He said that the
Royal Committee for the Modernization of Political System refers to the
government’s awareness of the challenges, but wondered whether actions are
consistent with the words.
“So we need a
new social contract or the so-called National Pact, which if codified, would
have been a social contract because it is an agreement between all components
of Jordanian society,” he said.
