Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of
Water and Irrigation’s Spokesman Omar Salameh, the Kingdom’s total rainfall has
reached 40 percent of average precipitation for the rainy season. This time
last year, it stood at a mere 23 percent.
CEO of Arab Weather Muhammad Al-Shaker said
the current rainy season is characterized by “unusual” weather patterns, as
compared to recent years.
Only one weather depression has hit the
Kingdom this rainy season, while other rainfall has been caused by unstable
conditions, he said.
Shaker described the quantities of rainfall
in the north “extremely concerning”, and “unprecedented” for recent years.
Irbid, for example, has received only 60mm of rainfall — a “low” number, he
said.
‘Good’ water levels at Kingdom’s dams
Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al-Najjar
said on Tuesday that the precipitation witnessed in the northern governorates has
been “modest”, while the storage of dams in the center of the Kingdom stands at
about average.
Salameh noted that, overall, the current
storage level of Jordan’s dams is “good”, especially in the south, with Mujib
Dam in Madaba Governorate at 80 percent capacity, Wala Dam (also in Madaba) at
50 percent capacity, and Al-Tanour Dam in Tafileh governorate at 35 percent
capacity.
