AMMAN — Poultry
prices are expected to rise as
Ramadan approaches, due to high production costs
and lack of feed, according to the Poultry and Feed Investors Association.

The association
told
Jordan News that the
government must put an end to any future price
hikes and shortages in feed, find alternatives, and come up with solutions to
ensure feed reaches breeders without hindrances.
The association
confirmed that the agricultural sector suffers from a severe shortage of
fodder, which threatens the livestock, adding that poultry breeders fear that shortage
of feed will lead to a shortage of poultry in the long run.
It also said that
the price of corn rose from JD180 per tonne to JD340, while the price of
soybeans rose from JD300 per tonne to JD530, and a tonne of broiler feed
increased from JD360 per ton to JD450.
The association
called on the government to cancel the 5 percent of tax levied on production
inputs, and to control prices that are increasing by the day, saying that “the
government calls for achieving food security, but it does not pay attention to
what these catastrophic rises in market prices lead to, and what will result
from them”.
According to the
association, the price of chicken will reach about JD2 per kilo during the
month of Ramadan.
“The government
should monitor and remove burdens that contribute to the rise in the prices of
feed and poultry, especially that farmers may be forced out of the agricultural
sector as a result of their losses and that the difficult economic situation
and the citizens’ weak purchasing power does not allow more price rises,”
according to the association.
Mohammad Abu
Shehab, who is the sales manager at a chicken farm, told
Jordan News that taxes on production inputs, compounded by the loss agricultural crops,
including corn and soy, due to the weather conditions are bound to increase
poultry prices by 20 percent.
He said that the
government needs to help farmers, who should not be made to pay the cost for
higher production input prices, adding that “the sector was also affected
during the
COVID-9 pandemic by the loss of expired frozen poultry”.
“The government
should support the sector, especially that we, in Jordan, have self-sufficiency
in poultry, and we must preserve it,” he added.
Member of the Board
of Directors of Jordanian Poultry Producers Association Hassan Bu Diqer told
Jordan
News that poultry prices are expected to rise by no more than 5-10 percent,
which “is slight, and that because of the weak purchasing power of citizens”.
“We have an
excellent stock of good quality poultry, and in cooperation with the Ministry
of Agriculture, constantly perform inspections to check the size of the stock,”
he added.
“So far, the price
of chicken reached JD1.85 per kilo; it used to be JD1.65, which is an increase
of 200 fils,” he said.
Director of the
Animal Production Directorate at the
Ministry of Agriculture Hussain Miqdadi
told
Jordan News that there is an increase in poultry prices due to the
global situation, especially the Russian-Ukrainian conflict which affects
prices, including production costs, and also because of the increase in
shipping costs, adding that “we hope that this increase will not be
significant, since we have an excellent stock of poultry”.
