“The issue of trucks has been a hot topic
for the last two months," Wreikat told Al-Mamlaka TV on Tuesday. A specialized
committee to address this issue, comprising all relevant authorities and headed
by the Minister of Transport, was formed with the approval of the Prime
Minister, and has held 11 meetings to-date, he said.
Short-term measures measures to regulate
the sector include fair distribution of freight volumes and the establishment
of an oversight company through the authority.
"Anyone who feels that they have been
wronged in their wages and trips will be able refer to this company," he
said, predicting that the company will be operational within four months.
Meanwhile, harsher penalties will be
imposed for violations against individual carriers working for shipping
companies, especially in regard to wages, Wreikat added.
Public transportation supportOn a related note, the director-general
stated that, by the end of March, a study will be submitted to the government on
continuing support to public transportation operators, either through further subsidies
or amended transportation fares.
The previous subsidy, in which the
government provided JD5 million in support to transport operators last year, was
due to steep fuel prices, he said, stating that he “did not know” how the fuel
price situation would play out in the future.
Rideshare appsIn terms of the contribution of rideshare
apps to the sector, 28 unlicensed transportation applications are active in
Jordan, Wreikat noted.
Meanwhile, there are seven licensed transportation
applications, only four of which are currently operational, he added.
