Amman - Minister of Environment, Dr. Muawieh Radaideh, Monday took part in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

According to a ministry statement Tuesday, Radaideh expressed support for the recommendation to declare a special protocol for drought under the UNCCD umbrella to enhance international cooperation in implementing drought reduction programs and providing financing mechanisms and capacity building initiatives.
The minister also presented the Jordanian government's role over the past years and its efforts in developing national policies and strategies related to managing and mitigating drought effects and adapting to climate change.
On the sidelines of the conference, the minister met with UK Climate Minister Kerry McCarthy, UAE Minister of Environment and Climate Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Executive Secretary of Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Dr. Musonda Mumba, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity Dr. Astrid Schumacher, and UNEP Regional Director Sami Dimassi, to discuss ways of joint cooperation and ways to provide the necessary support to implement environmental and climate projects and initiatives.
