Hneifat said the “rainfall level in the Kingdom decreased by 40 percent as a result of the climate change, which has exacerbated the problem of water scarcity in the Kingdom”.

Hneifat briefed the UN official on the goals set in the national plan for sustainable agriculture, and on the government efforts in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing supply chain crisis, which ensured that Jordan did not suffer from any shortage of goods and continued productivity.

He also said that, acting according to the Royal vision, the country had wheat in store, which helped the Kingdom face challenges, stressing that the King places great stock in the agricultural sector and the development of the national strategy for food security.

Hneifat praised “the strategic role of FAO and its continuous cooperation in support of projects that help Jordan face challenges posed by the increasing number of refugees, climate change and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic”, and said that FAO can provide appropriate training for agricultural workers.

He added that “the ministry dealt with the challenge of lower rates of rainfall by increasing the number of water harvesting projects.”

The FAO official said that “we will work together to establish a regional observatory for food security, in cooperation with the countries of the region”, noting “the importance of using modern agricultural methods such as mechanization and digitization, to enhance the resilience of the sector, and of global sustainable production related to water, soil, seeds and fertilizers”.

He also stressed the need for sustainable management to enable the sector to be resilient, and competitive in foreign markets, and to enhance the role that Jordan can play to face challenges related to food security locally and regionally.
