AMMAN — On Wednesday, moon watchers and celestial
enthusiasts will have the opportunity to witness a “supermoon.” What has been
branded as a supermoon simply means that a full moon occurring when the moon is
at or near its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee) will be
visible, as reported by Space.com.

Ala'a Azam, Assistant Professor of Physics at
the University of Jordan, clarified that this term, contrary to popular belief,
does not imply a blue lunar orb, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
According to Azam, a Blue Moon denotes the
rare event of two full moons in a single month or four in one season, with the
last termed "Blue Moon".
Azam explained the upcoming celestial
phenomenon occurred on the month's first day, with an encore at month's end,
marking the next full moon as the Blue Moon.
And indeed, night enthusiasts are in for a
treat today with what is called an actual blue moon. This is no longer just a
figure of speech. And it's not just any blue moon; experts are calling it a
rare blue supermoon. This phenomenon will not be visible again until 2037, as
reported by NPR.
So, fingers crossed, there will be visibility
without light pollution, and the Kingdom’s residents can enjoy that sighting
that comes “once in a blue moon.”
You can check this calendar here to see the
moon’s visibility and percentage rate to get accurate times.
