AMMAN — Some 23.5 million cubic
meters (mcm) were channeled into the Wala and Mujib dams during recent downpours,
raising the total storage of Jordan's dams to 71.1 million cubic meters (mcm),
23.5 percent of their total capacity of 280.76mcm.

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on
Wednesday said that Wala and Mujib dams received 12.5mcm and 10mcm of water,
respectively, bringing their storage to 12.625 (50.3 percent) and 13.582 (55
percent), respectively, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The heavy rainfall brought precipitation
levels for the rainy season to 37.4 billion cubic meters (bcm), 47 percent of
Jordan’s long-term annual average rainfall of 8.1bcm. The same period last year
witnessed 20.8 percent of the annual average, the ministry indicated. The
highest rainfall volume during the recent downpours was recorded in Khan al
Zabib in Madaba, at 45mm.
Across the governorates, Amman witnessed
the highest rainfall at 12.1mm, followed by Zarqa at 5.5mm, Madaba at 5mm,
Balqa at 4.6mm, Jerash at 4.1mm, Karak at 4mm, Mafraq at 2mm, Tafileh at 1.9mm,
Maan at 0.7mm, and Aqaba at 0.3mm.
