In a statement, Justice Minister Ahmed Ziyadat said
that the three-phase project, launched in partnership with the Judicial Council
and the
Public Security Department, has been completed, connecting about 23
court rooms and 17 rehabilitation centers.
Launched in 2019, the remote trial project was based
on the second paragraph of Article 158 of the Code of Criminal Procedure No. 9
of 1961 and its amendments, which allows prosecutors and courts to leverage
modern technologies.
Some 42,000 remote hearings were held since the
project began, allowing courts to hear 200 witness in different cases. Remote
trials have expedited litigation procedures, cut prisoner
transportation costs
and reduced contact among people under the current health situation imposed by
the coronavirus pandemic.
