AMMAN — Senator
Samir Al-Rifai has reiterated that the King is the guarantor
of the outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System within
its constitutional framework. He added that developing and modernizing the
political system is a collective responsibility for various sectors; official
and non-official institutions, including the government, political parties,
parliament, civil society institutions, universities, youth, and women.

Rifai
was speaking at the launch of “Jordan Youth 2030: Jordanian Youth Views on the
Outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System” organized by
Yarmouk University in cooperation with Al-Hayat Center-Rased.
He said
that he rejects security detentions for opinion-expressing activity, as long as
this activity is regulated by the law and the Constitution. He added that this
includes the recent arrests and the hefty bails that were requested from the
detainees. Rifai said that this sends the wrong message to everyone about our
democratic path, and the Royal desire to achieve the desired political
modernization.
He
stressed that the Jordanian identity is the national identity, regardless of
terminology.
He
pointed to the important role played by
Jordanian youth and women in the next
stage, and the necessity of their involvement and empowerment in the political
process. He said that it is unreasonable that between 1974 and 1993, only one
woman was successfully elected to parliament before the quota system was
introduced.
