AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs
and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi is set to lead the Jordanian delegation in
presenting oral arguments before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on
Thursday in The Hague. The presentation pertains to Israeli practices affecting
the human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian
territories, including East Jerusalem, Khaberni reported.

The oral argument is in relation to the advisory opinion
requested by the UN General Assembly under Resolution No. 77/247, issued on
December 30, 2022.
According to the Ministry's spokesperson, Sufian Qudah, the
Jordanian delegation includes Minister of Justice Ahmed Ziadat, alongside
Safadi, and the legal team contracted by Jordan for this purpose.
Qudah highlighted Jordan's previous submission of written
arguments before the ICJ in The Hague on July 24, 2023. These arguments
affirmed Jordan’s unwavering support for the Palestinians' right to
self-determination and the establishment of their independent and sovereign
state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Moreover, Qudah emphasized Israel's obligation to respect
the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian
holy sites, which Jordan bears great responsibility for under its historical
Hashemite custodianship.
Qudah clarified that this is not the first time Jordan has
appeared before the ICJ regarding the Palestinian cause. In 2004, Jordan
previously appeared before the court concerning the advisory opinion requested
by the UN General Assembly regarding the legal consequences of the construction
of the separation wall in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East
Jerusalem. The court's opinion at that time ruled on the illegality of the
wall, considering the legal evidence presented by Jordan, which demonstrated
the wall's illegitimacy.
