The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Tuesday
said that it has been collecting over the years official documents proving the
leasing of housing units Sheikh Jarrah residents by the Jordanian ministry of
construction and development in 1956.
Ministry spokesperson Dhaif Allah Al-Fayez said that, upon a
request from Palestinian authorities, certified copies of all found documents
were provided to the Palestinian embassy in Amman, according to a statement
from the Foreign Ministry.
Over 70 Palestinian families living in Sheikh Jarrah are
facing a fierce legal battle in Israeli courts to stop their forcible transfer
to make room for Israeli settlers, according to the Middle East Monitor.
In February, an Israeli district court in occupied Jerusalem
rejected an appeal filed by four Palestinian families of the Karm Al Ja'ouni
area of Sheikh Jarrah against previous eviction orders, the news outlet
reported.
According to the
Middle East Monitor, the court gave the
families until May 2, 2021, to leave their homes.
Al-Fayez added that the search process ongoing for documents
dating more than sixty years back.
These documents include leases, correspondence, records and
statements of the names of tenants.
Additionally, the Palestinian embassy was handed a certified
copy of the agreement between the ministry of construction and development and
UNRWA in 1954, under which the leases were concluded, according to Al-Fayez.
