In a statement
issued on the occasion of
World Children’s Day, which falls on November 20,
Save the Children said it surveyed a group of young men and women participating
in its programs about their view of this year’s theme, “Inclusion, For Every
Child”, and how it is possible to provide opportunities and a better future for
children in Jordan.
The young people
said that ensuring access to high-quality, consistent, and inclusive education,
taking into account the diverse needs of all children, is the basis for
creating a better future, the organization said.
The participants
included 20 young men and women between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. They
were interviewed during three sessions in eastern Amman and at Zaatari camp,
with interviews focusing on challenges faced in accessing quality and inclusive
education, including those faced by students with disabilities, according to
the statement.
The young women
interviewed said that they face many challenges in their studies, such as
poverty, early marriage, and bullying, while males complained more of physical
violence. Some children indicated that poverty forces them to work at an early
age while they are still in school, causing them to miss their classes.
According to the
foundation, children with disabilities face both learning difficulties and the
challenge of being accepted by their peers. At times, they are exposed to
bullying, and lack the facilities or tailored programs they need to complete
their education. This often leads to students with disabilities dropping out of
school.
National
legislation, enshrines education a basic right. The Ministry of Education Law
and the
Child Rights Law stipulate that children’s right to education must be
protected and aim to reduce school dropout rates.
The Ministry of
Education, in cooperation with the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities, launched a ten-year national strategy for inclusive
education in January 2020 to guarantee the right to education for children with
disabilities.
