AMMAN - The second phase of a flagship initiative designed to accelerate access to quality public education for about 144,000 Syrian refugees and 18,000 non-Syrian refugees was launched on Thursday.

Launched in 2018, the "Accelerating Access to Education Initiative" (AAI) is co-funded by Australia, Canada, European Union, Germany, Norway, United Kingdom and United States a total cost of JD51 million.
During a ceremony attended by donors' ambassadors and representatives, Minister of Education Wajeeh Awais said this support program, which is in its 5th year now, has enabled the ministry to continue to deliver on its promise of providing quality and accessible education to all children despite enormous pressures on the educational system.
Executive Director of the Development Coordination Unit in the Ministry Lama Natour indicated that this year the initiative will focus on reaching out to Syrian and non-Syrian refugee children who drop out of education, including increasing access to kindergartens and ensuring the provision of quality and comprehensive education.
She indicated that the second phase of the initiative also will focus on increasing resources to expand the enrollment of Syrian/non-Syrian refugees and other vulnerable groups enrolled in non-formal education programs.
This is in addition to increasing resources for children with disabilities in public schools, and increasing resources for teachers and students in schools serving
Syrian students, including camps and double-shift schools.
The initiative involves training new teachers, financing the salaries of teachers and administrative staff, opening additional double-shift schools, supporting inclusive education, purchasing textbooks, covering tuition fees, and covering costs related to management and equipment in these schools.
