During the committee meeting, Senator Ahmed Tabishat stated
that the proposed bill serves an urgent national interest that is directly tied
to the state. He stressed that
His Majesty's directions highlighted the
importance of passing this law, which is one of the basic norms governing
freedom. The law intends to ensure citizens' access to information from
ministries and public agencies, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
The updated draft law is consistent with compelling grounds,
international agreements, and best practices controlling the right to access
information. It attempts to improve openness, integrity, and anti-corruption
measures. It also aims to promote an information-access culture, empower
information seekers, and reorganize the Information Council to include
civil society representatives. Furthermore, it requires departments to classify
information as confidential or protected based on a categorization and indexing
mechanism.
