AMMAN — The Senate on Monday held its first meeting,
after His Majesty
King Abdullah inaugurated the 19th Parliament's first
ordinary session this morning, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

During the session, Senators elected the members of a
committee that will draw up a response to His Majesty's Speech from the Throne.
The members are: Samir Rifai, Raja'i Muasher, Ahmed Al-Owaidi Al-Abadi, Ihsan
Barakat, and Maddallah Al-Tarawneh.
"We were honored today as His Majesty King Abdullah II
inaugurated the 19th Parliament's first ordinary session, painting a patriotic
scene that His Majesty is committed to renewing each year," said Senate
President Faisal Fayez.
He voiced the Senate’s appreciation for His Majesty’s wisdom,
which has enabled Jordan to overcome hardships in the region, stressing that
the Senate will fully cooperate with various national institutions, in light of
the status quo and its economic, security, and social repercussions.
He commended the great efforts exerted by His Majesty to
strengthen democracy and achieve holistic development, and the King’s
longstanding commitment to enabling citizens to participate effectively in the
comprehensive reform process.
Fayez underlined that the Upper
House of Parliament will
address the outputs of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System,
with a patriotic duty to translate His Majesty's directives to achieve the
desired reform.
The Senate, he noted, will hold an in-depth reading of the Royal
committee's report, especially the draft laws for elections and political
parties, in addition to two constitutional amendments to fulfill King
Abdullah's vision for the modernization of the political system.
