The previous
Senate was formed by a Royal decree on September 27, 2020, in accordance with
Article 36 and paragraph 2/c of Article 40 of the Constitution.
At the time, the
members included three former prime ministers: Faisal Al-Fayez, Samir Al-Rifai,
and Maarouf Al-Bakhit, who was not re-appointed. While Fayez and Rifai remain
in the new Senate, they have been joined by two former premiers, namely
Abdullah Ensour, and Hani Al-Mulki.
The current
council includes 10 women, making up 15.4 percent of total members, which is
close to the representative percentage approved for women in the Senate.
According to
Al-Ghad News, the new Senate members include former lawmakers, ministers and
political figures. Nine former ministers were appointed, joining 17 others with
a total of 26 members.
