AMMAN — Senate
President
Faisal Al-Fayez on Thursday headed a joint committee meeting with a
number of ministers to discuss the situation of water and agriculture in
Jordan, in an attempt to find effective solutions facing the two sectors.

The joint panel in
question comprises the financial and economic committee — headed by Senator
Jamal Sarayrah — and with the Agriculture and Water committee — headed by
Senator Akef Al-Zu’bi. Thursday’s meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Local Administration Tawfiq Kreishan, Minister of
Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al-Najjar and Minister of Agriculture Khaled
Al-Huneifat.
During the meeting,
Fayez noted the importance of taking advantage of unutilized lands across the
Kingdom. Starting with the Badia region, as well as partially utilized regions
like Wadi Araba.
The Senate president
also stressed the need to produce crops that are in demand across Arab and
international markets alike, adding that some countries have expressed
willingness to import Jordanian produce.
Fayez said that
attracting a larger number of investments would go a long way in improving the
status of water and agriculture in the
Kingdom by establishing productive
projects that use state-of-the-art technology in and provide jobs to mitigate
unemployment.
