AMMAN — Minister of State for Media
Affairs
Faisal Shboul Tuesday told the Senate’s Media and National Guidance
Committee that the local media are suffering and facing losses, adding that
their reality has become “painful”.
Shboul was quoted by media outlets as saying that
the coronavirus pandemic had negative effects on the local media and could be
blamed for the decline in their share of the advertising market, which “has
been plundered by social media”.
He said that some 250 media outlets are registered
with the Media Commission, all of them competing in a limited advertising
market, adding that there are no accurate figures regarding the size of the
advertising market due to “the multiplicity of media and social media”.
Shboul said that
local media suffers from competition from social
media platforms with regard to digital advertisements, adding that these
advertisements are paid for in hard currency and without sales tax, while
advertisements in local media are paid for in local currency and are subject to
sales tax.
