Tourism and Environment Commissioner at Aqaba
Special Economic Zone Authority
Nidal Majali said that a Royal naval force was
able to refloat the ship.
He also said that divers from the Marine Science
Station and an environmental damage assessment team in the Aqaba Region were
checking coral reef for damage.
Later on Tuesday, Al-Mamlaka TV reported that
sizeable damage was caused to coral reefs as a result of the incident.
The ship ran aground as it was entering the
territorial waters toward a docking area near the shore of the marine reserve
and the Marine Science Station.
The
Royal Navy informed the commission of the
incident, which was dealt with directly by towing the vessel and directing it
toward the anchorage area, away from the shore, Majali said.
He confirmed that a diving team from the marine reserve and
an environmental damage assessment team began to explore the area to see the
damage to the coral reef, and asked the Jordan Maritime Authority to seize the
ship, and provide the authority with all details related to the incident, for
transfer to the public prosecutor, which will take legal action, according to
the Environmental Protection Regulation No. 21 of 2001.
