According to CNN Arabia, this announcement
comes after the
Saudi Arabian Astronomical Society announced on Monday in
Jeddah that "astronomical calculations indicate that the first day of
Shawwal will be Friday," according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The
International Astronomical Center
released a statement signed by 25 experts and published on its official
website. The center stated that "it is no secret to anyone the confusion
currently surrounding the discussion of sighting the Eid crescent on Thursday
evening, April 20, 2023, with some confirming that it
will be seen and that Eid will be on Friday, while others confirm that the crescent will not be
seen."
The center added that "the aim of this
statement is to clarify some scientific facts related to the issue of crescent
sighting."
Reputable scientific standardsThe center pointed out that: "all
standards, both old and new, indicate that sighting the crescent on Thursday is
not possible with the naked eye in the Arab or Islamic world."
It further clarified that "for
countries that require local (correct) sighting with the naked eye only, or
countries in Asia that accept local sighting with a telescope, Ramadan is
expected to be thirty days long and
Eid Al-Fitr is expected to be on Saturday,
April 22."
The center also stated that confusion
arises due to reports of sighting the crescent with the naked eye, which
specialists know to be incorrect.
