AMMAN —
Minister for Transport Wajeeh Azaizeh said
Sunday that the transport sector had been suffering for decades from
distortions, stressing the need to consider the support of the sector in line
with global developments. He said the ministry has developed a new strategy to
boost the ailing sector.

His comments
were made during a meeting held by the Lower House Finance Committee, which
discussed the finances of the Ministry of Transport and its departments.
Azaizeh said
that the sector faces funding gaps that holds back its sustainable
modernization, noting that part of the funding gaps are to be tackled this year
through transport projects.
The minister
said that the ministry is working on a future outlook for the transport sector,
and that the ministry has developed a transport sector strategy for the
upcoming years and is now ready to be discussed by the Cabinet.
Chairman of the
committee, Deputy Mohamed Al-Saudi, stressed the need to move forward in
developing strategies and updating different patterns of public transport in
line with rapid global developments in public transport, calling for support
for the sector to overcome the implications of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
