AMMAN — The former director of
Anti-Narcotics Department, retired Maj. Gen Tayel Al-Majali, said up to 20
million narcotic pills are seized, sometimes daily, in the Kingdom, according
to Khaberni.

Majali said seizing that amount of pills a decade
ago was considered a major trafficking operation by the Drug Enforcement
Administration.
He said that more than 400 drug dealers are on trial
on drug trafficking charges. “This is a big number for Jordan,” he said.
He said the law seems to have resulted in more cases
of drug abuse, calling for a stricter legal deterrent to addicts and
traffickers.
He pointed out that the lack of security in Syria
due to the war there gave a rise to drug smuggling across the border. He said
he expected 350 drug-producing factories there have been set up.
He noted that some militias live on profits
generated from selling drugs, and that Jordan stands as a wall to protect
itself and all the Gulf Arab states from the dangers of illicit narcotics.
Majali said that Jordan is free of farms planting
drugs and factories producing it. He explained that illicit drugs have become
widespread because of the large quantities of drugs smuggled across the
borders.
He said that through the seized quantities and the
number of users, “drugs have become present in our society”.
