Salsabeel Abu
Shouk, the student found dead in the dorm of
Al-Hussein Bin Talal University,
in Ma’an, died of natural causes, said Jameel Abu Shouk, her father, citing the
result of forensic analysis conducted at Al Bashir Hospital on Monday.

It was a myocardial
infarction, said the father, adding that his daughter had phoned him few
minutes before she fell suddenly in front of her friends and died.
“She was well,
preparing dinner with her colleagues,” said the father who stressed that the
dorm supervisors cannot be faulted for the death of his daughter.
His comments
came in reply to rumors circulating on social media.
“Some people
said that Salsabeel had waited for four hours for the ambulance to come, and
that is not true. She went to hospital, underwent some medical tests and came
back home; she called me and told me that she felt much better. No one in the
dorm felt that she was tired or needed any medical support until she fell down,”
the father told
Jordan News.
He asked social
media users to stop spreading rumors about his daughter’s death.
“If we had felt
that there was negligence or foul play, we would have been the first to raise
the issue. We are her family and no one loves her as much as we do,” he said,
adding that “I ask everyone to pray for her soul to rest in peace and respect
our privacy. We are already in a very bad situation and cannot bear reading any
more rumors.”
Samar Mohammed,
one of Salsabeel’s closest friends since childhood, told
Jordan News: “I
heard from her colleagues in the dorm that the supervisors stood by her and
tried to help her. When they saw that the ambulance is late, they decided to
take her to hospital in one of the dorm buses. Unfortunately, it was too late.
She was pronounced dead upon arrival.”
Rama, a
pseudonym, another student who lives in the dorm, was critical of the situation
in the dorm. She said that the central heating works for only two hours a day, students
get hot water for only as long each day, and supervisors, in general, do not
care about the students’ fate after 6:30 pm, when the doors of the dorm close,
only “make sure that we are in our rooms. If any of us needs help of any sort, there
is no one to help us”.
“I remember
that when a student complained to a supervisor about some medical problem, she was
told her take a painkiller and she will be fine. We are not allowed to get sick
after 6:30,” she said.
The university
said in a press statement that “at around six o'clock in the evening on Sunday,
January 2, 2022, student Salsabeel Jameel Abu Shouk visited Ma’an Governmental
Hospital, complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath, and after being
checked by the doctor on duty, was discharged because there was no need for her
to stay in hospital”.
According to
the statement, when the supervisors were informed of the student’s condition,
they took her to hospital, which is only one kilometer away from the residence,
in a very short time.
Salsabeel’s death
sparked wide attention on social media platforms, with some of her colleagues
and friends claiming that dorm supervisors were at fault, taking her to
hospital too late, and that their action led to her death.
