AMMAN — Professor
Wejdan Abu Elhaija, vice president of Princess Sumaya University for Technology
and Academic Affairs, was granted an international evaluation certificate for
engineering programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
(ABET), making her the first Jordanian to receive it.

ABET evaluates engineering
programs and specializations through work teams consisting of scientists,
specialists, and highly experienced people from industry, academic,
governmental, and private bodies, with a focus on curricula, faculty
competence, student level, material and human capabilities, university support
for the academic program, and on a number of elements related to the quality of
the educational process.
Abu Elhaija is the first
female professor of electrical engineering and the first female engineering dean
in Jordan. She holds a DSc in Engineering and a PhD in Electrical Engineering
from Queen's University Belfast.
Abu Elhaija is a fellow of
the British Higher Education Academy in teaching and learning, a senior member
of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a consulting
engineer at the Jordanian Engineers Association, a member of the Scientific
Committee for the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and a member of the Science
Education Committee at the Association of Academies and Societies of Science in
(AASSA).
Abu Elhaija received the
IEEE Clementine Saduwa Award, the Women in Science Hall of Fame Award from the
US Embassy in Amman, and the Hisham Hijjawi Award for Applied Sciences.
For 75 years, ABET has been
a non-profit organization owned and operated by more than 25 scientific and
engineering professional societies in the United States, involving more than
1,500 academic and industry professionals from around the world, with the
mission of developing high-quality standards for engineering education.
