The ministry said in a statement that a precisely coordinated operation, carried out in the countryside of Manbij by the Internal Security Forces and the General Intelligence Directorate in cooperation with unnamed international partners, led to the commander's arrest.

The detainee had served as "general military commander of Wilayat al-Sham" within ISIS, the ministry said. He had previously served as deputy to the group's former general military commander, an individual known as "al-Harithi," and before that led the group's Idlib province, using the same alias.

The ministry said the operation forms part of "continuous security efforts to pursue ISIS cells and leaders, dismantle its networks, and prevent its attempts to reorganize its ranks and threaten the security of citizens and the country's stability."

Syria formally joined the U.S.-led international coalition against ISIS in November 2025. The coalition, formed in 2014, has carried out operations against the group in both Syria and Iraq.
