AMMAN —
Teams are still battling with an oil leak from a ship that docked at Aqaba Port
last week and spread on the beaches, causing pollution, according to
Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Commissioner for Tourism and
Environment Nidal Al-Majali.
Majali said in a
press statement that the oil spill from the fuel tanks of the vessel “Floor of
Sea” at the Container Terminal spread to the shore, whipped by changing winds,
adding that fighting the oil slick requires specialized personnel and
equipment.
Marine Science
Station Director Ali Al-Sawalmeh asserted that readings taken from 11 seawater
spots in the first two days of the spill showed that coral in the Gulf of Aqaba
was safe and that the slick had not affected marine environment.
ASEZA has referred the oil
leak case to the Aqaba prosecutor.
