AMMAN — The number of tourists to Petra shot up by 292
percent between January and October this year, to reach 609,204, Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.

Of these,
489,280 were foreigners,
Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA)
statistics show.
According to
PDTRA Chairman Suleiman Al-Farajat, “the flow of tourists into the ancient city
is good”.
In the
comparison period last year, 155,545 people visited Petra. But although more
tourists were registered in the rose-red city this year than in 2021, the
number remains below the level recorded in the corresponding period of 2019,
before the breakout of the
COVID-19 pandemic, when 890,194 people — of whom
773,009 foreigners — visited Petra, some 32 percent more than this year.
The closures
imposed by the pandemic dealt a blow to Jordan’s tourism sector, which in 2019
registered a record number, more than 1 million visitors, for the first time in
its history, according to the PDTRA.
In an effort to
promote tourism in the Kingdom, the Jordanian embassy in Beijing organized a
promotional activity on the Chinese social media app Kyushu, which is followed
by millions of people, a local news outlet reported.
Jordan’s
Ambassador to China Hussam Al-Husseini said that the embassy has been promoting
tourist places in the Kingdom through social media, an ideal way to reach a
large number of people and encourage Chinese tourists to visit Jordan.
The promotional
campaign also entailed a presentation of the most important tourist places in
Jordan, including Petra,
Wadi Rum, Aqaba the Dead Sea, Jerash and Salt, as well
as of the Jordanian culture, customs, traditions, and cuisine.
Husseini said out that
in 2019, before the pandemic, 50,000 Chinese tourists visited Jordan.
