AMMAN — A local non-profit research
institute, the Jordan Society for Scientific
Research, held a seminar Sunday to discuss the potential of
desert truffle cultivation in Jordan as a rare and profitable commodity with both nutritional
and health benefits.

During the seminar, truffle
cultivation expert Muhammad Awameh explained Jordan's capability in producing
desert truffles and presented a plan for truffle farming due to its importance
and economic viability, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The Ruwaished desert in the far east of the Kingdom is an ideal area to grow desert truffles, which can be harvested between February and April.
Two generaAwameh noted that Jordan has two
genera of truffles, Terfezia (locally
known as Khalasi) and Tirmania (locally known as Zubaidi), which have similar
nutrients to meat and can be used in the treatment of trachoma.
He added that the Ruwaished desert
in the far east of the Kingdom is an ideal area to grow
desert truffles, which
can be harvested between February and April, depending on precipitation levels,
particularly if accompanied by lightning, thunder, and snow.
Participants
of the seminar expressed the importance of growing and investing in
truffle cultivation, generating questions and comments throughout the discussion.
