The ambassador’s
announcement came as part of a visit to the
National Aid Fund’s (NAF) main
branch in Amman where she met with NAF acting director-general Barq Al-Damour
and heard from NAF beneficiaries on how UK-supported cash transfers under the
Takaful 3 program have positively affected their lives following the impacts of
COVID-19, the statement read.
The
Takaful 3 program was launched in January 2021 to provide cash transfers to
160,000 vulnerable households including informal workers
whose livelihoods were negatively impacted by the pandemic. This
latest funding, according to the statement, will benefit approximately 72,000
individuals.
This
additional funding brings the UK’s total support for Jordan’s social protection
since the beginning of the pandemic to £34 million.
In 2020, the
program provided cash transfers to 293,000 economically vulnerable Jordanian
households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including those who had lost jobs
and livelihoods in the informal sector and female headed households.
Concluding her
visit, Ambassador Brind said that she was delighted that British support had “helped
the NAF to reach so many vulnerable beneficiaries during 2020 and 2021. My
meeting with families supported by (the) NAF’s emergency cash transfers
confirms how the program continues to make a positive difference to their lives
by strengthening their resilience during the difficult circumstances of the
COVID-19 pandemic.”
Commenting on the
visit, acting NAF director-general Domour said: “The UK’s efforts in providing
financial and technical assistance support in Jordan, alongside other donors
and technical partners, have enabled the improvement and expansion of our
social protection in Jordan, allowing it to bring more benefit to more
beneficiaries.”
