The resolution, introduced by Jordan and a group of member states, garnered the support of 159 countries, with 9 votes against and 11 abstentions.
The Assembly expressed its full backing for UNRWA’s mandate across all its areas of operation, including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied Palestinian territories.
It also condemned a law passed by the Israeli Knesset on October 28, 2024, and called on Israel to uphold its international obligations, respect UNRWA’s privileges and immunities, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza without delays or obstruction.
The resolution emphasized the urgent need for essential services to be provided to civilians in Gaza, where the population is facing extreme hardship.
The General Assembly cautioned against any efforts to reduce or dismantle UNRWA’s operations, warning that such actions would have severe humanitarian consequences for millions of Palestinian refugees and destabilize the region.
Additionally, the Assembly called for compensation, under international law, for the damage caused to UNRWA’s operations in the occupied territories. It also urged the UN Secretary-General to assess the full extent of these losses.
Finally, the resolution appealed to member states to provide financial support for UNRWA to continue its critical work.
