AMMAN — UN Assistant Secretary-General for
Humanitarian Affairs
Joyce Msuya visiting Syria and Jordan between May 15 and
20 is expected to meet with senior government officials in the two countries,
as well as representatives of humanitarian organizations and donors, to discuss
challenges

She also plans to visit humanitarian projects and
discuss with affected communities the challenges they face, according to a UN
statement. Eleven years of conflict in Syria resulted in “huge suffering” for
the civilians, says the UN statement.
“The number of people in need is now more than at
any time since the beginning of the conflict, with 14.6 million people needing
assistance and protection this year,” a
UN spokesperson said.
In a joint statement, Under-Secretary-General for
Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, UN High
Commissioner for Refugees
Filippo Grandi, and UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner
said that “the solution to the crisis must be political”.
