This year’s theme was “A World of 8 Billion: Towards
a Resilient Future for All - Harnessing Opportunities and Ensuring Rights and
Choices for All.”
Enshrah Ahmed, UNFPA chief in Jordan, said that
World Population Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the need to find solutions
that benefit society and enable individuals to exercise their rights, including
reproductive rights.
“This year is significant for the UNFPA because the
world’s population has reached eight billion,” she added.
Because human
rights are the foundation of development, she noted that the fund’s message for
this year is centered on equal opportunities for all.
She stressed that investing in people paves the way
for diverse and successful communities that support and shield human and
reproductive health rights from prejudice and violence.
People under the
age of 34 years old make up the majority of the world’s population, according
to
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ghulam Mohammad Isaczai, who
asserted the importance of investing in youth and involving them in supporting
the future.
