The funding will provide
technical assistance, equipment, and supplies to health facilities diagnosing
and treating COVID-19 patients, including Al-Bashir hospital and Jordan’s
laboratories. The funds will also train frontline health workers providing
critical care to
COVID-19 patients and administering vaccines, according to the
statement.
USAID Mission Director
Sherry F. Carlin highlighted that “protecting lives and Jordan’s economic
stability are shared goals in the strong partnership between our two
countries,” adding that the additional funds are intended to help reinforce
Jordan’s healthcare system by building medical workers’ skills to care for
coronavirus patients.
“This assistance will
accelerate progress in the joint fight against COVID-19,” Carlin concluded.
Since the pandemic first
broke out, USAID has provided more than $36.5 million in COVID-19 assistance to
Jordan, the statement said.
Through USAID’s
partnership with the government, it has trained over16,500 frontline health
workers, provided lifesaving equipment to hospitals nationwide, and increased
COVID-19 testing capacity from 500 tests per day to 50,000 per day.
In partnership with the
Ministry of Health, USAID launched multimedia campaigns to share accurate
information on stopping the spread of the disease and to build confidence in
vaccines to increase the uptake of vaccines across Jordan.
