AMMAN — The Department of Statistics (
DoS) on Monday announced that the
unemployment rate during the first quarter of the year stood at 25.0 percent,
marking a hike of 5.7 percentage points compared to the same period in 2020.

According to the DoS, the
unemployment rate among men reached 24.2 percent, constituting an increase of
6.1 percentage points, while unemployment among women reached to 28.5 percent,
marking a rise of 4.2 percentage point compared to the same period last
year.
Results indicate that the
unemployment rate is higher among those who have bachelor’s or higher degrees, standing
at 27.8 percent, in comparison to other educational levels, according to the
report issued by the department.
People who have high school degrees
or a higher level of education account for 51.0 percent of the total unemployment
rate, according to the report, while those who have qualifications below than
high school constitute 49.0 percent of the total.
Men with bachelor’s or higher
degrees constituted 25.1 percent of the unemployed, while women with the same
educational level accounted for 79.6 percent of the total unemployment rate.
The report added that the
highest unemployment rate was registered among youth in the age groups 15-19
and 20-24 years old, reaching 60.5 percent and 45.7 percent respectively.
Meanwhile, the reviewed rate of
economic participation in the Kingdom (labor force in relation to the working
age population) reached 34.5 percent.
