AMMAN — The unemployment rate during the first quarter of
2023 has decreased by 0.9 percent, compared to same period in 20222, and
decreased 1 percent in comparison of the fourth quarter of 2022, reaching 21.9
percent.

The unemployment rate for males during the first quarter of
2023 was 19.6 percent, compared to 30.7 percent for females.
According to the statement by the Department of Statistics
the unemployment rate was high amongst university degree holders, unemployed
individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher divided by the labor force with
the same educational qualifications, reaching 25.8 percent compared to other
education levels, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
Education levels in unemployment
Meanwhile, the results from the department indicated that
54.9 percent of unemployed individuals had a high school degree or higher,
while 44.7 precent had educational qualifications lower than a high school
degree.
The percentage of unemployed individuals varied according to
educational level and gender, with the male unemployment rate for bachelor's
degree holders or higher at 26.7 percent compared to 79.5 percent for females,
according to the statement.
Unemployed youth
The youth unemployment rate in the age group of 15-24 years
reached 46.1 percent for the total population (42.1 percent for males compared
to 64.1 percent for females).
On the provincial level, the highest unemployment rate was
recorded in Al Balqa Governorate at a rate of 26.4 percent, while the lowest
unemployment rate was in Madaba Governorate at a rate of 18.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the percentage of employed individuals out of the
total population aged 15 years and above was 26 percent.
Of the male employed individuals, 60.5 percent were
concentrated in the age group of 20-39 years, while the percentage for females
was 60 percent, according to the statement.
It also indicated that 48.6 percent of the employed
individuals had educational qualifications lower than high school, 8.9 percent
had a high school degree, and 41.8 percent had higher than high school qualifications.
The results showed that the majority of employed
individuals, 85.3 employees, were wage employees (83.1 percent for males
compared to 94.9 percent for females).
The results revealed a "clear disparity" in the
distribution of the labor force according to educational level and gender, with
57.5 percent of the total male labor force having educational levels below high
school compared to 11.0 percent for females.
The results also indicated that 71.5 percent of the total
female labor force had a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 26.4 percent
among males.
The adjusted labor force participation rate (the labor force
as a percentage of the population aged 15 years and above) was 33.3 percent
(53.3 percent for males compared to 13.7 percent for females) for the first
quarter of 2023, compared to 33.2 percent (53.2 percent for males and 13.7
percent for females) for the first quarter of 2022.
