Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Wajih Owais said that
the ministry is paying special attention to scientific research, which has an
earmarked JD13 million fund. He said scientific research is accessible to any
scientific group that has an interest in implementing “breakthrough” projects,
provided that such projects are economically feasible and are capable of
solving a problem in Jordan.
Owais noted that the 2022 budget stands at
JD99 million, of which JD70 million are channeled to support universities.
Owais affirmed that the grants and
scholarships are distributed fairly and according to priorities; where 500
seats, 150 scholarships, and 350 loans were assigned to each district.
The minister pointed out that the decline in
the level of higher education is due to the increase in the number of students,
which has resulted in a huge pressure on universities’ resources and budgets,
noting that in total, universities debts have reached JD100 million.
Secretary-general of the Ministry of Higher Education
Mamoun Al-Debie spoke about the reduction of government support to universities
in 2019 from 80 to 70 million despite demands to increase funding beyond JD90
million, and added that “the shortage of funds has significantly affected our
Jordanian universities.”
