In a statement, the police media spokesperson said the
suspect was wanted on 25 criminal charges, of which 20 were for
drug trafficking offences.
Upon seeing police approaching his position, the suspect
allegedly opened fire on the officers, who engaged the assailant, the statement
said, adding that despite the officers urging him to surrender, he “resisted
and continued shooting.”
The police officers were able to overwhelm the suspect, who
was injured. He was offered medical treatment and transferred to hospital.
The spokesman said that the suspect had escaped a failed
arrest attempt about a month ago, when he fired shots at police.
