The minister told Petra in an interview that five
consortiums had been prequalified and had received the project’s technical
documents, adding that bidders had been given six months to submit their
financial and technical offers.
According to Najjar, the pipeline-based project, which
involves the construction of an intake station and a desalination plant in the
Gulf of Aqaba, is expected to cost $2.5 billion. However, the minister said the
figure is “not final”.
He described the project as strategic and a top priority for
the Kingdom’s water security, indicating that it will provide the capital and
other regions of the Kingdom with around 300 million cubic meters of
desalinated seawater annually.
