The world faces many challenges
regarding freshwater, including Jordan, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation
said that the decrease in rainfall, the increase in temperature, and population
growth have led to the emergence of a resource crisis.
Sources in the Ministry of Water, who
preferred not to be named, told Al-Ghad that despite the administrative
improvements that the water authorities are trying to make, there is still an
imbalance between supply and demand due to instability and insecurity in the
region as well as social, economic, and environmental impacts of climate
change, according to the National Water Strategy for the years 2016–2025.
The report “Water can reduce global
risks”, warned of the main environmental risks related to water, recommending
the need to understand the importance of the role of water, and thus improving
the chances of finding effective solutions. The report stressed the importance
of the role of water in mitigating the effects of climate change, as it is the
most dangerous threat to the world.
The report also pointed out that extreme
weather is considered the second most dangerous risk due to a year of unprecedented
floods, heat waves, droughts, and hurricanes in many parts of the world.
The report was based on the fact that 90
percent of extreme weather events are related to water, which calls for more
investments in early warning systems in addition to recommendations to make
agriculture more resistant to drought.
