AMMAN —
Simon Khoury, a sports enthusiast famous for his expertise in water sports,
died in Lebanon Saturday, Khaberni reported. He was 92.
The Lebanese-born
Khoury was a pioneer in the marine sports movement in the Red Sea resort of
Aqaba, and an advocate of water sports since the 1960s. His contributions led
to the revitalization of the tourist movement in Aqaba, through a number of
hotel investments, tourist facilities, and marine parks.

One of the world’s
outstanding slalom skiers, winning four silver and one bronze medal in that
event while representing Lebanon in the World Championships from 1953 to 1963,
Simon has since introduced and organized water skiing in the Middle East.
As President of the
Royal Jordanian Water Ski Federation for the past twenty-seven years, he has
promoted 28 international water ski festivals and three European championships.
He was active in
the Disabled Council and hosted a European Championships for the Disabled in
Jordan.
Simon was also one
of the world’s foremost show skiers, acting as show director for Cypress
Gardens and skiing there in over 6,000 shows.
He is survived by his wife and four children, including
three daughters and a son, called Habib Khoury.
