AMMAN — The winter solstice in the northern
hemisphere for this year will take place at 3:48am on Thursday, said Imad
Mujahid, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences and fellow

The December solstice, between December 20–23, will markthe day winter begins
astronomically in the northern hemisphere, said Mujahid, according to the
Jordan News Agency, Petra. It will last 88 days and 23 hours, while summer
prevails in the southern hemisphere (summer solstice), which will last 93 days,
he added.
Mujahid said that the sun will rise on the day of the winter solstice in Amman
at 07:26am from the far southeastern corner, and set at the far southwestern
corner at 05:43pm. The length of the night will be 13.53 hours, the longest
night of the year, while the length of the day is only 10:07 hours, the
shortest day of the year.
